Repeats every week every Tuesday.

Interactive, immersive, and intense, the Evans Police Department guides cadets through an unforgettable course, where they can learn from the Cops, how to be a Cop

The Citizens Police Academy is back! The nine-week course will run September 13 – November 8, 2022, with most classes held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. We will also be adding a day at the shooting range that is scheduled for Saturday, October 8 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

“I was hoping to just gain a better understanding and I really did,” 2021 Participant Celeste Stewart, said. “We learned the ins and outs of everything from a traffic stop to the coroner's office visit to the jail. One of my favorite classes was probably wearing the beer goggles. It was a simulation of what it would be like to do drunk driving and we got in a little golf cart and ran over cones.”

The Citizens Police Academy promotes community partnerships and is designed to familiarize individuals with the day-to-day operations of the police department. Participants will attend lectures on topics such as crime scene investigations, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, SWAT, firearms, and less lethal force.

“They had the crime scene set up in the backyard and they laid out a scenario for us,” 2021 Participant Jonathan Ewert, said.  It was a barbecue and they had a gunshot go off. There's a dead victim, you know, and they asked us ‘what do you think happened?’ And so we got to go through the process and see if we could find different bits of evidence and piece together the crime.”

The program is free. Seating is limited to 25 participants and you must be at least 18 years of age to participate. A background check will be completed on applicants prior to acceptance. Applications can be obtained at the Evans Police Department front desk during regular business hours, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, or by contacting Officer Teresa McClatchey at 970-590-1504 or email at tmcclatchey@evanscolorado.gov

Application deadline is September 2, 2022.
