City of Evans Updates Garage Sale Permit Requirements
City of Evans Updates Garage Sale Permit Requirements
Residents planning a garage sale in Evans are encouraged to review updated garage sale regulations that were recently adopted by the City Council.
The updated ordinance, passed by the Evans City Council on June 2, 2026, establishes clear guidelines for garage sales held within city limits and helps ensure sales are conducted safely and in accordance with local regulations.
Under the updated code, residents must obtain a free garage sale permit from the City Clerk's Office before advertising or holding a garage sale. The permit process helps the City track sales and ensure compliance with established requirements.
Garage sales include traditional garage sales as well as yard sales, lawn sales, attic sales, basement sales, and similar events where personal household items are offered for sale at a residence.
Key Requirements
The updated regulations include the following provisions:
- A free permit is required before holding or advertising a garage sale.
- Garage sales may be conducted for a maximum of two consecutive days.
- Individuals and organizations may hold no more than two garage sales per year.
- No more than two garage sales may be held at the same property within a one-year period.
- Items sold must be personal property and may not be merchandise acquired specifically for resale.
- If inclement weather prevents a sale from occurring, a new permit may be issued.
Garage Sale Signs
The ordinance also establishes requirements for garage sale signs.
Signs may not be placed on:
- Traffic signs or poles
- Traffic signal poles
- Streetlight poles
- Other City-owned traffic control devices
- Private property without the owner's permission
In addition, garage sale signs must be placed within 300 feet of the sale location.
Applying for a Permit
To obtain a permit, applicants will be asked to provide:
- Their name and address
- The address where the sale will be held
- The dates of the sale
- A brief description of the items being sold
- Information about how the items were acquired
Permits are issued at no cost through the City Clerk's Office.
