Garage Sale Permits

On June 2, 2026 the Evans City Council approved Ordinance No. 861-26, reimplementing garage sale permits. 

What is considered a garage sale?

A garage sale includes any sale of personal household items at a residence where a business is not normally allowed to operate. This includes:

• Garage sales
• Yard or lawn sales
• Attic or basement sales
• Similar residential sales

Permit Required

Before holding a garage sale, residents must obtain a free permit from the City Clerk's Office. It is recommended that the permit be printed and displayed in a front window of the residence hosting the garage sale.

The permit application requires:

• Name and address of the applicant
• Address where the sale will be held
• Date(s) of the sale
• A brief description of the items being sold
• Information about how the items were acquired

Please submit your permit application to the City Clerk's office at least three (3) business days prior to your planned sale to ensure adequate time for processing and approval. 

Sale Limits

To help maintain neighborhood character and prevent ongoing retail activity in residential areas:

• Garage sales may last no more than two consecutive days
• A person or organization may hold no more than two garage sales per year
• No more than two garage sales may be held at the same property within a one-year period

If bad weather prevents a sale from taking place, a new permit may be issued.

Garage sales are intended for the sale of personal property. Permits will not be issued for merchandise purchased specifically for resale.

Advertising Signs

Garage sale signs:

• Must be placed within 300 feet of the sale location
• May not be attached to traffic signs, traffic signal poles, streetlight poles, or other City-owned traffic control devices
• May not be placed on someone else's property without the owner's permission

Important Information

Providing false information on a permit application may result in the permit being revoked.

Violations of the City's garage sale regulations may be subject to penalties under the Evans Municipal Code.
