Update From Greeley on Foul Smelling Tap Water
The City of Evans receives 100% of its treated water supply from Greeley. Below is information from the City of Greeley related to concerns about the odor currently present in tap water.
Greeley Water customers have noticed an earthy or algae-like taste or odor in their tap water this week. Greeley water remains safe to drink, use, and consume.
The taste and odor are associated with naturally occurring compounds released by algae in the Boyd Lake Treatment Plant’s source water system. These compounds can be noticeable even at very low levels.
City Staff are actively monitoring and responding by:
* Testing water in the system frequently
* Monitoring water entering the Boyd Lake Treatment Plant
* Monitoring finished drinking water in the distribution system
* Adjusting treatment to improve taste and odor
* Managing valves and system operations to help move affected water through the system and into the watering system for our parks and golf courses
Dry conditions this year have limited the city’s normal ability to shift or blend water sources, making this issue more difficult to avoid.
Customers can continue to drink, cook with, bathe in, and use the water as normal. If you are sensitive to the temporary taste or odor, chilling water, using a carbon filter, or adding lemon, cucumber, or mint may help improve the taste.
